Biological Diversity

Biological Diversity refers to the variety of living organisms that form natural and human- engineered ecosystems. The inter-dependence of organisms naturally evolves to adjust to change over time, but human activity is impoverishing the environment faster than natural evolution can keep up with. (http://www.eoearth.org/article/Biodiversity)

According to ecologist Robert Whittaker, these organisms can be classified into five different kingdoms that survive through land, water and air. There are the bacteria, protocists (which include algae), fungi, plants and animals. In each kingdom there are a number of species and it is the variability within and between these species that form ecosystems and natural habitats. (Roberts 1997)
