Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs)

The Biodiversity Convention in Rio recognised that every country had it's part to play in preserving the the richness of life on earth. It was an important component ot the EARTH SUMMIT and was signed by over 150 countries. Also signed was
- Sustainable Development
- Sustainable Forestry
-Climate Change

This was signed by the Prime Minister in 1992 with a UK action plan goal of:

"Conserving and enhancing biological diversity within the UK and to contribute to the conservation of global biodiversity through all appropriate mechanisms". (The UK Steering Group Report, 1995)

This action plan was launched in January 1994 chaired by the Department of the Environment in order to meet the Rio Commitments (Article 6a)

The Biodiversity Steering Group was set up to prepare costed action plans for plants, animals and habitats. It oversees the development of a range of targets and plays a part in monitoring the implementation of actions contained in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. This Steering Group is made up of academics, nature conservation agencies, the collections, business farming, land management, voluntary conservation bodies and local and cental Government.

The UKBAP enables Local BAPs to be drawn up in order to tackle national and local priorities. This can focus resources to conserve and enhance biodiversity through local partnerships. An example is found here.

The UKBAP also prepares Species Action Plans and Habitat Action Plans. These are made by JNCC and nature conservation agencies. The habitat statements include 37 broad habitats, 38 key habitats and EC Habitats Directive Listed Habitats for special attention.
English Nature also prepare Species Recovery Programmes, these started in 1991 focusing on 13 species.
