The Angel Shark has been protected under Schedule 5 section 9 WACA81 since 1998 . Protection does not apply to territorial waters between 6 and 12 nautical miles from baseline waters. As with all sharks they are highly vulnerable to illegal exploitation. This shark is vulnerable as by-catch from trawlers as it lays along the bottom of the sea. It is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List
