Cetorhinus maximus: This is the second largest fish in the world, the largest fish being the Whale Shark,. It is part of the lamniform family cethorhinidae and has been protected under all parts of Schedule 5, Section 9 WACA81 since 1998. It is listed as Appendix II under CITES which means its trade needs to be monitored. However it can be difficult to identify shark products to species of origin.and Appendix I and II of the CMS so that member states implement legislation banning fishing and trade in this species. It is also listed under Annex I of UNLOS and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under Criterion A.
Basking Sharks have been caught for their Dorsal Fin, medical research, blubber and liver. The high market value of the shark fin will continue to drive exploitation and covert trade, reaching around US $57 000....The liver of the Basking Shark is very large and oily, weighing around 500kg, about one quarter of the weight of the whole fish. This is due to their diet which mainly consists of Zoo Plankton which feed off Phyto Plankton. Zoo Plankton are tiny invertebrates which are very oily. The oil from the liver of the Basking Shark used to be used to fuel the street-lights of Dublin. This oil has also been used for lubricating oil and used in cosmetics.

Other threats include collisions with ships, environmental contaminants, incidental capture and drowning in fishing gear and also directed takes - Norway has an annual quota of 200-300 in EU waters.
This particular species of fish has also been used for medical research. Basking Sharks seem to be resistant to cancer which will appeal to the anthropegic values in humans that make Basking Sharks a popular species to investigate and research.
Sexual maturity is reached at around 18-20 years of age which is a huge factor in their falling numbers, either being killed before they are able to reproduce or killed during their long gestation period of around 12 months, although this is not certain. They give birth to around 6 pups which hatch from eggs inside the uterus, the embryos also feed on eggs in the uterus. They are a migratory species which therefore brings about conservation law issues and makes them extremely vulnerable to the environmental changes that affect us all.
